Applying for a Thai Visa Online: The thaievisa.go.th Guide
Step-by-step guide to applying for a Thailand e-visa through the official thaievisa.go.th portal, including documents, visa types, fees, and processing times.
Thailand’s official e-visa portal at thaievisa.go.th, operated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is now the primary way for most nationalities — including UK nationals — to apply for a Thai visa without visiting an embassy in person. Whether you need a Tourist Visa, a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV), or a Non-Immigrant visa before you arrive, the portal handles the full application online. This guide explains what the portal covers, what you need to prepare, and how to get your application right first time.
What thaievisa.go.th covers
The thaievisa.go.th portal is the official e-visa platform run by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It acts as the online submission point for visa applications processed by Thai embassies and consulates worldwide. Rather than handing in a physical file at an embassy counter, you create an account, select your embassy, choose your visa type, upload scanned documents, and pay by credit card.
Visa types available through the portal include:
- Tourist Visa (TR) — single-entry, valid for a stay of up to 60 days
- Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) — valid for six months, multiple entries, each granting up to 60 days
- Non-Immigrant visas — covering Non-B (business), Non-O (retirement, marriage, family), Non-OA (long-stay retirement with health insurance), and Non-ED (education)
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa follow separate application routes and are not submitted through the standard thaievisa.go.th portal.
The portal currently covers applicants in over 40 countries. UK nationals applying from the United Kingdom can use it, as can applicants from most of Western Europe, North America, and Australia. Check the portal directly for the current country coverage before starting.
Documents to prepare before you begin
Uploading complete, clearly formatted documents is the single most common point of failure in e-visa applications. Prepare everything before you open the application form — the portal does not always save progress between sessions.
For all visa types:
- Passport — valid for at least six months beyond your intended entry date, with at least two blank visa pages
- Passport photograph — against a plain white background; JPEG format, typically under 2 MB
- Scanned passport bio-data page — clear, flat, no flash glare or shadows
For a Tourist Visa or METV, additionally:
- Flight itinerary — a confirmed e-ticket or clear travel plan
- Proof of accommodation — hotel or host confirmation for at least the initial period of your stay
- Bank statements — recent statements showing a balance adequate for your trip
For Non-Immigrant visas: Supporting documents vary by sub-category. A Non-B requires a business invitation letter or employment contract. A Non-O for retirement requires evidence of financial means. A Non-OA requires proof of qualifying health insurance with minimum coverage. Confirm the exact requirements for your category before you begin; the portal lists them within the application.
All uploaded files should be in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format, generally under 2–3 MB each. Blurry scans or oversized files are flagged or rejected before they reach the reviewing officer.
How to apply: step by step
- Register an account at thaievisa.go.th with a personal email address you monitor regularly. Status updates and requests for additional documents arrive by email.
- Select your embassy or consulate. The portal routes your application to a specific Thai mission. Applications submitted through one embassy cannot generally be transferred to another, so choose correctly at the outset.
- Choose your visa type. Read each category’s description carefully. Selecting the wrong type — for example, a Tourist Visa when your actual purpose is employment — creates problems on arrival even if the application itself is approved.
- Complete the online form. Enter personal details, travel plans, and financial information. Everything here must be consistent with your supporting documents. Discrepancies between the form and uploaded files are among the most common causes of rejection.
- Upload your documents. Check that each file meets the format and size requirements shown for your chosen embassy.
- Pay the application fee. Payment is by credit or debit card; Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most embassies. Fees are non-refundable, including in cases of denial or cancellation. The METV government fee is approximately 5,000 THB; other visa categories carry their own fees — confirm the current amount for your category on the portal before paying.
- Monitor your application. Log in regularly after submission. Some embassies request additional documents and give applicants a limited window to respond. Missing this window typically results in rejection without a refund.
Processing times and what to expect after approval
Standard processing takes 5 to 15 working days for most visa types, though this varies by embassy and by season. Busy periods — around the new year and ahead of high season from October to February — often extend this. As a working rule, apply at least four to six weeks before your intended travel date to allow time for any back-and-forth on documents.
When your application is approved, you will receive an email notification. Log in to download your e-visa document or approval letter. Print this or save a clear copy on your phone and present it at airline check-in and at Thai immigration on arrival. Many airlines will not board passengers without sight of the visa document. Once you clear Thai immigration, check the date stamped in your passport before leaving the desk — this is the actual permitted stay, not the visa’s validity period.
How Gateway Siam can help
Putting together a clean visa application is simpler in principle than in practice. A mismatched document, a non-compliant photograph, or the wrong visa type selected can mean delays, a rejection, and a non-refundable fee. At Gateway Siam, we help UK and Chinese nationals apply through the portal correctly from the start — confirming the right category for their situation, reviewing all documents before submission, and handling the detail work so that the application is ready to approve, not ready to query. If your situation is more complex, such as a Non-O based on retirement or marriage, a Non-B requiring Thai business documentation, or a DTV application, we manage the full preparation. Contact us before you open the portal, not after something has already gone wrong.
