Thailand visa for freelance designers
Design freelancers qualify for the DTV comfortably on income, and get refused on paperwork.
A designer with three long-standing clients and a signed contract for each is a straightforward case. A designer with sixty Upwork jobs across two years is not — not because the income is worse, but because marketplace work produces transaction records rather than relationships, and an embassy is looking for a relationship.
The fix is usually available and usually ignored: convert your best clients onto a simple written agreement before you file. It costs nothing, and it turns the strongest part of your income into the strongest part of your file.
The documents an embassy expects from this occupation. Missing one is the usual reason a case stalls.
- Signed contracts or statements of work with your main clients, all outside Thailand
- Six to twelve months of invoices with matching bank credits
- 500,000 THB held in a personal account for at least three months
- A portfolio site or Behance/Dribbble profile showing a continuous professional history
- Marketplace earnings reports (Upwork, Fiverr, Contra) as supporting, not primary, evidence

A marketplace-only history
Platform transcripts show volume, not employment. Use them to corroborate, but put at least one or two proper client agreements at the front of the pack.
Payments through PayPal or Wise only
Intermediary balances are hard to read as income. Sweep client payments into a named bank account so there is a clean, conventional statement to submit.
Designing for Thai businesses
A Thai café's branding, a Bangkok startup's website — paid work for Thai-registered clients is Thai work, and no amount of foreign income elsewhere makes it acceptable on a DTV.

Is Upwork income enough on its own?
Rarely. It is accepted as supporting evidence, but a file built only on marketplace transcripts reads as casual work. Pair it with at least one direct client contract and clean bank statements.
Can I sell prints or products while I am here?
Selling to customers abroad through your own foreign shop is remote work. Selling into the Thai market, at markets or through Thai platforms, is trade in Thailand and needs the business route.
How much income do I actually need to show?
There is no published income floor for the DTV — the hard number is the 500,000 THB in savings. Income evidence is about credibility: enough, consistent, and from outside Thailand.
