Thailand visa for online teachers
Teaching students abroad from a laptop in Chiang Mai is remote work, and the DTV covers it. Teaching in a Thai classroom is not, and it never will be.
Online teachers sit in the most misunderstood position of any occupation we handle. The visa question is easy — a DTV, on the same terms as any other remote worker. The evidence question is hard, because platform teaching produces the weakest paper trail of any remote profession: a dashboard, irregular payouts, and often no contract at all.
Income levels make this worse. A platform teacher earning the equivalent of 60,000 THB a month is a perfectly credible applicant, but only if the 500,000 THB is genuinely there and genuinely seasoned. This is the occupation where we most often tell clients to wait three months before filing rather than risk a refusal on the record.
The documents an embassy expects from this occupation. Missing one is the usual reason a case stalls.
- Your contract or terms of engagement with the platform or overseas school
- Six months of payout statements from the platform, plus the matching bank credits
- 500,000 THB held in a personal account for at least three months
- TEFL, CELTA or a teaching qualification, and your degree certificate where you have one
- A letter from the school or platform confirming you teach students located outside Thailand

Teaching Thai students for a Thai school
If the school paying you is registered in Thailand, you are working in Thailand — online or not. That needs a Non-B, a work permit and, for classroom roles, a teacher licence. This is the single most common way online teachers end up on the wrong side of the rules.
A dashboard is not a bank statement
Platform earnings screens carry little weight on their own. Every payout you claim should be traceable to a credit in a bank account in your name, ideally for six months rather than three.
Thin or seasonal income
Teaching income dips over holidays, and a three-month snapshot can land on your worst quarter. Show a longer run so the average, not the trough, is what the officer sees.

If your teaching income is too thin to evidence but you want a long stay, enrolling in a genuine Thai-language course is the cheaper, more honest route — and it keeps a refusal off your record.

Can I teach in a Thai school on a DTV?
No. Any employment by a Thai-registered school or agency needs a Non-B and a work permit, and classroom teaching additionally needs a teacher licence and, for most posts, a degree.
My income is under 500,000 THB a year. Am I out?
Not necessarily. The 500,000 THB is a savings requirement, not an income one, so a modest earner with a healthy balance can qualify while a high earner who spends everything cannot. Income evidence still matters, but the bank balance is the hard gate.
Can my partner come with me?
Yes. Spouses and children under 20 can be filed as dependants alongside the main DTV application. They will need their own supporting documents, but not their own 500,000 THB.
